Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Friday accused the US of foreign interference after the son of her mentor and predecessor Andrés Manuel López Obrador said he had his visa cancelled .

ndrés Manuel López Beltrán, a former senior party figure who is preparing to run for Congress next year, published a three-page letter on Instagram saying that the “Hitlerian” decision came from “gangster bosses” who have a “sick, conservative phobia” of his leftwing Morena party.

Throughout his second term, US President Donald Trump has piled pressure on the Mexican government, claiming that corrupt officials have helped finance organised crime and traffic drugs into the US, particularly the synthetic opioid fentanyl.

His administration has removed visas from high-profile governors and members of Congress over alleged ties to organised crime. In a historic move, the US also indicted high-ranking sitting officials from the ruling Morena party, rather than waiting until they left office.

Sheinbaum said on Friday that recent US visa revocations were politically motivated and not about stopping crime.

“It’s a kind of foreign intervention in Mexican politics,” she said in her morning news conference.

The US state department said it would not comment on specific visa cases but said: “Under President Trump and secretary Rubio’s leadership, the state department will continue to ensure that those granted the privilege of entering the United States do not threaten the safety of Americans or undermine US national interests, for example.”

While some US officials have praised Sheinbaum for her collaboration on security matters, she has become more critical of the Trump administration in recent months as it has continued its tariffs and investigations into Mexican officials.

Trump had a relatively good relationship with López Obrador while he was in office. The former Mexican president fulfilled the US leader’s principal demand by deploying the military to stop migrants from reaching the US-Mexico border.

But during Trump’s second term, the US president has been squarely focused on drug cartels and the flow of deadly opioid fentanyl north, which has been more difficult to solve.

López Beltrán suggested in a letter published on Thursday evening that Trump had acted arrogantly and called for him to fire US secretary of state Marco Rubio and deputy secretary of state Christopher Landau.

“I don’t mind not going to the United States in these decadent and sad times of hate, racism, drug addiction . . . I can wait until thing

s change,” he wrote.

The rightwing opposition National Action Party (PAN) claimed in a statement that López Beltrán was linked to several corruption scandals and demanded an investigation into his alleged links to a vast fuel-smuggling network.

“All roads lead to Andy,” the party wrote in a statement.

López Beltrán has denied wrongdoing, including any links to fuel smuggling.

Contraband fuel exploded during López Obrador’s administration, with tankers of improperly declared fuel arriving from the US and passing through ports controlled by the military for distribution across the country.

The illegal fuel trade is the second-largest source of financing for drug trafficking groups including the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
